Joe Bavlnka - Head Coach
I started wrestling in 7th grade. My social studies teacher Mr. Bold was the coach and asked me to give a try. My Dad also wrestled in high school and college, so he gave me a lot of support through the years. I wrestled in high school and went to the state tournament twice. I placed 4th my junior year, I actually lost the 3rd place match to Brandon Holt who was from Baraboo. Pete Sprecher and Mike McGann were his coaches, so I hear about it a lot. I then moved onto UW-Stevens Point were I wrestled varsity for 4 years and was captain my senior year. Johnny Johnson was the head coach and Dennis Hall was the assistant coach, two very accomplished wrestlers, and were great mentors/coaches. I don't think there was a more experienced coaching staff at the division 3 level in the country, and I feel very fortunate to have spent those years wrestling with them by my side. I never worked harder, and it prepared me for my future. After I was done competing, I was a graduate assistance and coached with Dennis in his youth club for a year. I then started teaching/coaching in Baraboo. This is my 10th year in Baraboo. It is a great community to raise a family, teach and coach in. I was assistant coach for 5 years, co-coach for 3 years, and I took over as head coach last season (2011-2012). I feel very lucky to have work under Mike McGann and Randy Ebright, two very experienced teachers and coaches who always want to do the right thing for their students/wrestlers. As head coach, I want to carry on the strong tradition Mike has left and build onto it. I want to continue to instill a strong work ethic and integrity into Baraboo wrestlers. In my spare time I like to spend time with my family and go fishing with my father. During the summer, I am full-time Dad when my wife Claudia is at work. My two daughters, Charlotte and Honore are harder to handle than any opponent I've wrestled! |
